Choosing Inductors for AI GPU VRM (H100, B200)

High current inductors used in an AI GPU voltage regulator module
Quick answer

AI GPU VRM inductors must handle MHz switching, 60-100A+ per phase, tight board space and high ambient temperatures. FeNi powder cores (Bs ≥1.5T, 0.047-6.8µH) provide stable DC bias and low core loss in small footprints, which is why they are evaluated for H100 and B200-class VRM designs. Specify frequency, peak current, ripple and thermal budget, then validate with samples at the real operating point.

AI accelerators like NVIDIA H100 and B200 draw hundreds of amps across tightly packed voltage regulator modules (VRMs). The inductors in those VRMs have to switch at 1MHz or higher, carry tens of amps per phase, and stay cool in a 24/7 datacenter environment. Here is what to evaluate when selecting them.

1. Switching frequency

Higher frequency shrinks inductor size and capacitor count, but raises AC core loss. At 1–100MHz, the core material — not the copper — usually dominates losses. FeNi powder cores hold core loss ≤300kW/m³ at 100kHz and remain usable well into the MHz range, which is why they appear in MHz metal inductors for GPU VRMs.

2. DC bias and saturation

GPU phases can see 60–100A or more. An inductor with Bs below the operating flux saturates, inductance collapses, and ripple spikes. FeNi cores with Bs ≥1.5T and a distributed air gap keep inductance stable under heavy bias, preserving efficiency at full load.

3. Core loss at ripple frequency

The ripple current is a small percentage of DC but switches at the full PWM frequency. Low-loss powder cores reduce temperature rise and let designers use smaller parts. Ask suppliers for core loss curves at your exact frequency and ripple ratio rather than a single datasheet number.

4. Thermal and form factor

VRM space is measured in millimeters. Inductor height, footprint and hot-spot temperature all matter. 30% volume reduction versus ferrite is typical with FeNi, which directly translates to denser GPU boards and better airflow.

Specification checklist for H100 / B200-class VRM

  • Frequency: 1–100 MHz, confirm target core loss density
  • Inductance: 0.047–6.8µH typical for GPU rails
  • Saturation current: margin above worst-case peak phase current
  • DC resistance (DCR): keep below target for efficiency
  • Temperature: validate at 105°C+ ambient with thermal imaging
  • Reliability: AEC-Q200 style qualification for server-grade endurance

Frequently Asked Questions

What inductors are used in AI GPU VRM designs?

Molded metal-composite inductors are widely used because they combine a shielded low-profile body with stable inductance under heavy bias and manageable loss at MHz switching. YUTE’s molded metal-composite inductors cover the GPU VRM range with saturation current headroom for high phase currents.

Why does switching frequency matter for VRM inductors?

Higher switching frequency reduces the inductance needed for a given ripple, which allows a physically smaller component and faster transient response. The trade is that core loss rises with frequency, so the core material must be evaluated at the real switching frequency rather than from a nominal datasheet value.

How important is DC bias stability in VRM inductors?

It is the primary constraint. GPU phases can draw 60–100 A or more per phase, so the inductance that matters is the value remaining at full load. A core that rolls off gently under bias preserves ripple control and loop stability where a sharp saturating core would not.

What should be specified when sourcing a VRM inductor?

Switching frequency, inductance and ripple target, continuous and peak phase current, saturation margin, acceptable DCR, height and footprint limits, and the thermal environment on the board. Samples should then be measured at the real operating point.

Why is low DCR important for AI accelerator power?

At low output voltage and high current, conduction loss in the inductor is a large share of total loss. Low DCR reduces that loss directly, which lowers temperature rise in an enclosure where thermal margin is shared with the processors.
