NiFe Core Manufacturer: Capabilities to Verify

Iron nickel (NiFe) powder cores are a premium choice for high-current inductors because of their high saturation and stable permeability — but those properties come from tight control of the alloy and the process. Here is what to verify in a NiFe core manufacturer.

1. Alloy and material control

The 50Fe/50Ni alloy composition directly sets Bs (≥1.5 T) and loss. Ask about alloy sourcing, lot traceability and how composition is verified. A supplier that cannot document the alloy input cannot guarantee the magnetic output.

2. Permeability grades and stability

NiFe powder cores are pressed to permeability grades such as 14–160. Verify the grade tolerance, the bias curve at your operating current and the permeability variation over temperature (YUTE spec: ≤8% from −40°C to +180°C). These are the numbers that decide whether your inductance holds at full load.

3. Pressing, heat treatment and insulation

Core loss depends on particle insulation and the heat-treatment profile after pressing. Confirm the manufacturer controls both, and ask for core loss data at your frequency and flux swing rather than a single datasheet point. See the Permeability note for what the numbers mean.

4. Testing and qualification

  • In-house measurement of permeability, core loss, Bs and dimensions
  • Bias curve data per grade, not just a nominal value
  • AEC-Q200-style qualification for automotive and server programs
  • Failure analysis and lot traceability for volume production

5. Custom development

High-current designs rarely use a stock core. Confirm the manufacturer can develop custom geometries, custom permeability grades and wound inductors around their cores (OEM/ODM), and that engineering evaluates your L, current, frequency and size targets before quoting.
